Flat Earth

We have recently seen an increase in the numbers of people who believe that the earth is flat. We believe that the earth is in the shape of a sphere. The challenge for those who believe in a flat earth is to answer this question – Does what you believe to be true match reality? We would ask them to explain the following phenomena and concepts in light of a “flat earth”:

  1. The apparent spherical shapes of the sun and its planets
  2. Law of gravity
  3. Newton’s 3 laws of motion
  4. Antarctica is the fifth largest continent on earth
  5. One can take an airplane flight across the Antarctica as well as across the Arctic
  6. It takes longer to fly from Boston to Seattle than from Seattle to Boston
  7. Coriolis effect
  8. Foucault Pendulum
  9. Scale to measure distance between two places on a map of “Flat Earth” cannot be shown
  10. Seasons cannot be explained on a map of “Flat Earth”
  11. Sun can never illuminate the “Ice Wall” at the same time
  12. Can’t predict start, stop and trajectory of a solar eclipse
  13. Can’t see objects in a distance (8″ over 1 mile) over the horizon (over land)
  14. Can’t see objects in a distance (8″ over 1 mile) over the horizon (over water – refraction)
  15. Sunrise and sunset, with or without a dome
  16. Longitude (meridian) and Latitude lines
  17. How does the moon create tides?
  18. Solar and lunar eclipses
  19. Communication satellites around the earth
  20. How does the sun (and moon) rotate in the sky (without gravity)?
  21. How does GPS work on a FE?
  22. What are the sizes of the sun, moon, stars in the sky?
  23. How to explain seasons?
  24. What causes the earth’s magnetic field?
  25. Magnetic field protects the earth.
  26. Travel across the Antarctica – how to explain?
  27. Flying from Australia to certain parts of the Antarctic would take a long time.

The Ten Things All Flat Earthers Say:

  1. Gravity makes no sense – buoyancy and density
  2. I should not see this thing, but I do – earth must be flat
  3. Water doesn’t curve, and water finds its own level – electromagnetic force
  4. Perplexed about how the earth’s atmosphere exists next to the vacuum of space
  5. How can water stick to a ball spinning at 1000 miles per hour – gravity
  6. Moonlight is colder
  7. Water cannot flow up – north/up
  8. The earth is closer to the sun in summer than in winter
  9. Science is a religion – scientism
  10. We have all been indoctrinated by government, teachers, etc.

Ten Challenges for Flat Earthers:

  1. The map proposed by FE’ers does not match reality
