Preparing Youth for Missions

Description: The next generation is preparing for missions, going on short term trips and as a career. We must recognize that more than 60% of our youth leave The Faith when they leave home because they did not get answers to their hard questions and were not able to counter their indoctrination in evolution and secularism. To be effective in missions, youth need to understand the gospel, have a biblical worldview, and develop critical thinking skills to overcome roadblocks to The Faith. They need to have trust in The Word, be ready to defend The Word, and then ready to share The Word.
Speaker: Dr. Heinz Lycklama earned a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Physics (1965) and a Ph. D. degree in experimental Nuclear Physics (1969) from McMaster University in Canada. Since then he has worked in the telecommunications and computer software industries at Bell Telephone Laboratories in NJ and at Interactive Systems Corporation in CA – as an individual contributor and in management positions. In 1992 Dr. Lycklama founded Open Systems Technology Associates (OSTA) to offer his technology management consulting services to various start-ups in the high technology industry. In 2013 Heinz founded the Apologetics Forum to help equip believers in the defense of The Faith.
Being challenged in his Christian faith by what he was taught in university in the 1960’s, Dr. Lycklama has always maintained an active interest in the Creation vs. Evolution controversy. He has developed a series of lectures on Creation vs. Evolution, Christian Apologetics, and Biblical Worldview over the years and presented the material in Sunday school classes, to college students, during church services, at Bible Schools, and other venues in Europe, Asia, Africa and North America. With his knowledge of the Bible and science, Dr. Lycklama has continued to develop and present new material in these subject areas. Dinosaurs and the Bible
Description: This talk helps people understand 1) how dinosaurs fit into the classification of kinds found in Genesis, 2) how dinosaurs could have been on the ark, and 3) what might have happened to them after the Flood. We will also look at the state of the fossils we find and what they prove and don’t prove. The talk focuses on the differences between the Genesis perspective of classifying these beasts and the secular way of classification; when and how it developed, the transitions and changes that have taken place during the 1800s through the present and what we have ended up with today.
Patrick will bring a couple of bins of vertebrate fossils for attendees to examine.
Speaker: Patrick Nurre was trained in the secular view of geology. Over the past 40 years he has been actively involved in the Creation/Evolution issue in the field of geology. He has spoken to hundreds of college students, and is a popular speaker at many conventions and home school conferences. In 2005, Patrick created Northwest Treasures to provide opportunities to study geology from a Biblical perspective. In the fall of 2012, he opened the Geology Learning Center, a geology museum/educational center located in Lynnwood, WA. Patrick leads field trips each year to many geological sites including his annual field trip to Yellowstone Park in August.

The Dinosaur Bone Wars
Description: The Bone Wars or The Great Dinosaur Rush was an intense period of paleontology during the years 1877-1892. It primarily involved two men and their quest to find and name the most dinosaurs. O.C. Marsh represented Yale and was supported financially by his wealthy uncle, Peabody. Edward Cope represented the Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia and worked himself to exhaustion to get ahead and stay ahead of Marsh in finding and naming the most dinosaurs. Each hated the other and spent a fortune and their honors to outdo, undermine and destroy the other. Although between the two of them they named over 150 species of dinosaurs, very few are accepted today as legitimate. This was the beginning of American Paleontology and it is today still trying to recover from this black eye. This seminar is about that fossil war and the dinosaurs Marsh and Cope discovered.
The Bone Wars shows us that scientists are human and are often misled by their biases. Many scientists are not even aware of their biases and how they shape their opinions. How often has the search for glory or the need to be right can and did, in the case of the bone wars, negatively influence policy, paleontological doctrine and personal lives as these discoveries were inspiration for confirmation of evolutionary ideas and consequently supported the idea that the Bible was a myth. The Bone Wars also shows us that the nature of paleontology is largely one of conjecture. Not much can be said scientifically about the great beasts we call dinosaurs. The rush to judgment and conclusions during the Bone Wars has led millions of people astray. Human nature has not changed. Many similar mistakes today have had similar results. One generation of paleontologists overturns the previous discoveries and conclusions of other paleontologists.

Calling All Chess Players!
Open Chess Challenge with Dr. Jonathan Sarfati
Dr. Sarfati will play up to 30 chess players at once in the afternoon after the Mini-Conference to be held in the morning at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon, WA. Players are selected on a first come basis and must bring their own chess board to the tournament.

Dr Jonathan Sarfati Ph.D., F.M. is an accomplished chess master and a former New Zealand Chess Champion, representing New Zealand in three Chess Olympiads (he drew with Boris Spassky, world champion 1969-1972). In 1988, the International Chess Federation awarded him the title of F.I.D.E. Master (FM). Jonathan has been known to play multiple chess matches while he is blindfolded. Jonathan more regularly plays multiple sighted challengers, up to 20 – 30 at a time.
Dr. Sarfati has performed this feat, against up to 12 challengers at once, at several major international conferences. A former chess champion of New Zealand, Jonathan is a scientist whose Ph.D. is in physical chemistry and quantum physics. He works for Creation Ministries International as a lecturer, scientist, and writer, showing how Christians can believe the Bible from cover to cover—especially when it comes to Genesis and creation vs evolution!

Description: Dr. Jonathan Sarfati presents a message on:
- Widespread apostasy in young people—not because of lack of evidence, but lack of dissemination of the evidence.
- Jesus as Creator, as well as Kinsman-Redeemer, meaning that He must be our blood relative. This means that all humanity must come from Adam, also the ancestor of Jesus, the Last Adam. Adam’s sin brought death, so Jesus brought Resurrection—Rom. 5 and 1 Cor. 15 make an explicit connection.
- Since death came through sin, fossil record must post-date Adam. Explained by Genesis global Flood, which has other evidences.

Jonathan was a co-founder of an Apologetics Society in New Zealand, then joined Creation Ministries International (CMI) in Australia in 1996. In 2010, he and his American wife transferred from the Australian office to the USA office near Atlanta.
Dr Sarfati has authored some of the most popular and powerful books on the issues of origins, strongly defending biblical (‘young earth’) creation and refuting the strongest arguments for evolution and millions of years. His first book, Refuting Evolution, has sold half a million copies, making it the best-selling creationist book of all time (apart from the Bible!). His latest and most important book is The Genesis Account, a thorough 800-page theological and scientific commentary on Genesis 1–11.
Jonathan is also a chess master and former New Zealand chess champion, and drew a tournament game with former world champion Boris Spassky. One specialty is playing simultaneous chess games, sometimes ‘blindfold’, i.e. from memory.

The Dead Sea Scrolls
Description: An exploration of how the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls and the archaeology of Qumran shed light on the Bible and add to the credibility and authenticity of the transmission of the Biblical text. Using current scientific methods (DNA testing) and scholarly examination (paleography-handwriting) the scrolls come alive and provide a valuable resource in our study of Scripture as God’s Word.

Fossils and Evolution: What is the Biblical View?
Description: Secular geologists have rejected Biblical history and assert that there has been no global flood as described in Genesis. But vast quantities of fossils and sedimentary rock provide a monumental testimony to this historical event and God’s recent judgment. Is the worldview of these geologists causing them to “deliberately ignore that the world was deluged with water and perished” (2 Peter 3:3-6)?
This presentation provides the Biblical answer to the fossil record and an encouragement for Christians to trust in the Bible as authoritative on early Earth history. Numerous examples of fossils are provided that defy conventional explanation and interpretation in support of the theory of evolution. When examined, we can easily see that the fossils have been misinterpreted by naturalistic scientists and are much more consistent with catastrophic activity and a young Earth.
Speaker: Chris Ashcraft is a Christian educator employed as high school science teacher at Cedar Park Christian Schools, and adjunct professor at Northwest University. Chris has also worked in plant biotechnology. He was a research technician at the Cotton Fiber Production Laboratory at Texas Tech University, then at the Plant Transformation Facility at Oklahoma State University, and lastly was the Plant Transformation Specialist for EDEN Bioscience in Bothell, Washington.
He obtained a Bachelor of Science in biology from Wayland Baptist University in 1989, a Master of Science in biology from Texas Tech University in 1996, a Master of Education from the University of Washington in 2008, and a Master in Teaching Math and Science from Seattle Pacific University in 2012.
Chris moved from research science into the teaching profession to serve God in Christian education. His decision was motivated by the impact that secular science is having on people of faith. Today, close to 50% of Christian students lose their belief in God while attending secular schools. This tendency could be lessened if the Church was better equipped to defend the authority of Biblical teachings (1 Peter 3:15). To be prepared for these challenges, it is important that Churches provide regular educational programs on creation and other Bible Apologetics.

The claims made by Dawkins are not hard to answer if we use some critical thinking. You will be surprised to find out that the supposed “evidence” that is used supposedly showing human evolution as a fact, isn’t what the actual evidence supports if we use some critical thinking. There will be an extended time for Q&A after the second seminar.
The first seminar at 9:00 AM is on Answering Skeptics … Richard Dawkins!
Dr. Dawkins isn’t known for being friendly! Can Christians withstand his attack? Watch and see. Richard Dawkins is one of the most antagonistic of the “new atheists”. In this talk Carl takes a video that Dr. Dawkins made where he ambushed then President of Concerned Women for America, Wendy Wright, and addresses the questions that he raised. Christians need to be aware that if Richard Dawkins is using an argument, hundreds of those that follow his every move will use it. Using secular sources Carl will show that the claims that he makes are not that difficult to give an answer to. The problem is not in the evidence, the problem is in the interpretation of the evidence. What about homo erectus? What about homo habilus?What about austrolopithecus? What about children having “gill slits” as they develop in their mothers womb?These plus many more questions are addressed in this talk. This talk is designed to address the “Know it!” component of the Reasons for Hope ministry.
The second seminar at 10:30 AM is on Real World Evangelism – The Smithsonian!
Can’t make it to Washington D.C. to tour the Smithsonian? Let’s do a virtual tour, from a biblical perspective.Using only secular sources Carl will discuss the supposed evolutionary ancestors that are depicted in the Smithsonian’s 24.5 million dollar exhibit showing human evolution. This is a great talk to do with people just before they go on a trip to Washington D.C. and visit the world famous museum. You may be surprised at what is actually found, and what is depicted. You may also be surprised to find out that the supposed “evidence” that is used supposedly showing human evolution as a fact, isn’t what the actual evidence supports. This is a VERY important talk and ones that will hopefully show parents how to teach their children to apply their faith in the “real world”! Answering Skeptics … Bill Nye
This program is designed for the youth and others with an interest in being able to defend their faith. The program is structured as follows:

Description: Recently Bill Nye the “Science Guy: has revealed himself to be very antagonistic of Christianity. Let’s address his claims.Bill Nye has become popular again recently. He did a “Big Talk” video where he went after those that don’t believe in evolution in a major way. In this talk Carl will break down that video and address his claims. In addition questions that he raised will be addressed using secular sources.
What does he mean by “evolution”? Are “tiny changes” the mechanism by which a worm eventually turned into humans? How are mutations involved in that process? Can a “Christian” really do “science”?What about “ancient dinosaur bones”? Don’t they show Christians are wrong? Plus more!
Christians need to be ready to give an answer for the reason for the hope that they have within them. Becoming Bold
Description: The church is losing its next generation at an alarming rate. What can we do about it? Anywhere from 50 to 88 percent of the young people raised in Bible-believing Christian homes walk away from the church after age 18. In this talk, Carl examines the causes of this huge exodus, but then shows that by starting with the Bible, solutions can be offered to this massive problem in the church. Teaching just Bible stories to our children isn’t working; young people in our churches need to know how to stand uncompromisingly on the authority and accuracy of the Bible so that they can answer the skeptical questions of the age. Human Evolution?

Wherefore Art The Begats?

In this high-energy presentation, Dan Kreft does the unthinkable–he makes “the begats” fun. Learn what the purpose is for each of the five major genealogies in the Bible, and find out if we really can use them to estimate the age of the earth; the answer may surprise you.
The objective of this talk is to show the audience how to refute the argument for gaps in the Genesis 5 & 11 genealogies using only the Bible, a little common knowledge of history, and some clear reasoning.

Lake Missoula Flood: A Message of Catastrophic Processes
Description: For many years, geologists thought that the channeled Scablands and Dry Falls of Eastern Washington were carved out by gradual processes over many millions of years. Now it has been established that they were caused by a massive flood event. See deep canyons hundreds of feet deep carved in sold basalt rock, yet no flowing water is present! Discover the many evidences of the flood from Montana to the Willamette Valley in Oregon. We will examine the reluctance of the geological community to accept an alternate view to slow processes and long time frames (“the present is key to the past”). We will discuss how these sites support the catastrophic Biblical history of a world-wide flood.
We will illustrate that the face of the earth can be dramatically changed in a few minutes or hours. It doesn’t take millions of years! We will examine the outstanding example of these not well known events in our own back yard that over-shadow the scale and scope of the famous Mt. St Helens Eruption (even though the message is the same).
Speaker: Ron Payne has a B.S. degree in chemistry from the University of Washington and studied microbiology at Oregon State University. He spent 35 years in the Aerospace Industry as a Senior Principle Materials and Process Engineer specializing in chemical processes, waste treatment, metallurgy, circuit board fabrication, metal finishing, adhesives, coatings, paints, cleaning, electronic assembly, procurement engineering and technical documentation. He was a Board member for the Creation Association of Puget Sound (CAPS) and also for the Mount St. Helens Creation Center for more than 15 years. He managed and provided creation resources for CAPS and spoke on various creation topics to homeschool and church groups. Basic Creation Training Course.
This one-day course is designed to prepare Christians to speak about and defend the biblical account of creation with confidence and be better equipped to present the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Target Audience: Ninth grade and above (A great course for getting your high school student trained to defend their faith).
Certification: This course is certified for one Continuing Education Unit (CEU) for Christian school teachers.
Course Goal: To prepare Christians to be able to speak about and defend the biblical account of creation with confidence and be better equipped to present the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Instructional Method/Format: Lecture, class participation, and exercises.
Course Outline
Chapter 1: Establishing and Defending a Biblical Worldview
Chapter 2: Handling Objections
Chapter 3: Science and Time
Chapter 4: The Flood, Geology, and the Fossil Record
Chapter 5: Biblical Apologetics
Chapter 6: Dismantling Two Foundations of Evolution
Course Length: 1 day (8:00 am – 5:00 pm)
Course Cost: $45 per student ($35 for each additional family member) $25 Students.

Critical Thinking and Dinosaurs
This program is designed for the youth and others with an interest in being able to defend their faith. The program is structured as follows:

Genesis and Biblical Discernment
This message starts by discussing biblical discernment (1 Th 5:21-22). Three examples are used as lessons on biblical discernment.
1. How long were the days of creation?
2. Did God use evolution?
3. What are schools teaching and not teaching?
The message concludes by focusing on Christian youth and why so many are leaving the church.

The Creation Dialogues
An Engineer Looks at the Creation/Evolution Controversy
Description: A presentation that looks in-depth at the Evolution vs. Creation controversy from the perspective and education of a Christian professional engineer and conclusively answers the question, “Can Christians really accept evolution and millions of years into their faith?” Based on the book The Creation Dialogues – 2nd Edition. Appropriate for ages 12 and older.
Several book resources complimentary to Mr. Mitchell’s talk will be available at the book tables. Mr. Mitchell will also have a number of living fossils on display as well as a table of fossils that will be available for sale.

Description: This PowerPoint presentation examines different groupings of favorite atheistic ideas for supporting biological macroevolution as a scientific fact. The first look is at the best evidences that evolutionists supported at the beginning of the speaker’s ministry in 2005; then a description of what the speaker now believes are most often promoted by evolutionists to the general public as the best evidences for evolution. The third examination is of what a recent nationwide survey determined that the youth of today believe are the “most convincing” evidences for evolution. Finally, the very most convincing evidence, according to the youth, is debunked by the speaker.

Only Believe
Description: The Christian “world” seems to be full of apologists today, trying to defend the Christian faith, and prove the existence of God. This honorable intent is marred by the fact that most modern apologists attempt their ministry in a manner which is unbiblical. In this talk, taken from the book of the same name, Paul gives an introduction to biblical apologetics, commonly known as presuppositional apologetics. He shows its biblical basic, and outlines its methodologies.
Speaker: Paul Taylor, Director of Mount St. Helens Creation Center, was born and grew up near Manchester in the North of England. He studied piano at Chetham’s School of Music, but read Chemistry at the University of Nottingham. Paul taught Chemistry, Physics and Science in government (“public”) schools in England and Wales for 18 years, eventually becoming a Head of Science, with a Masters in Science Education and Management from the University of Cardiff.
Paul was saved at the age of 15. He came across creationist literature in his late teens, and quickly became involved in speaking and writing on the subject of creation and evolution, Genesis and apologetics. Since 2005, he has been a full-time creation speaker, having worked for Answers in Genesis (UK/Europe) and Creation Today. He and his wife are the Directors of the Mount St Helens Creation Center. Paul is married to Geri, and they have five children between them.

Itching Ears
Description: The Apostle Paul said that “the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.” In this talk, based on the book of the same title, we show that the important primary Christian doctrines of the Bible either depend on a foundation of a literal reading of Genesis, or at least are reflected in the text of the early chapters. The talk briefly mentions doctrines such as the Trinity, the Deity of Christ and the Inerrancy of Scripture.

Darwin’s Dangerous Lie
Description: Recent secular biographies of Charles Darwin, such as that of A.N. Wilson, have undermined the previous hagiographical approach of writers such as Janet Browne. Darwin’s personality flaws have been examined, and shown to have continued into adult life. This talk – the preliminary stage of research into producing a major biography of Darwin from a creationist perspective – examines Darwin’s childhood influences, and his youth, and applies these to the events leading up to the publication of the Origin of Species. The spiritual dimension of that publication is also examined.

How Old Is The Earth?
Description: Why the Earth is only a few thousand years old.
The earth was created by God in six twenty-four hour periods, just a few thousand years ago. This talk is a detailed look at the Biblical and scientific justification for the so-called ‘Young Earth’ position.

Description: This talk focuses on the use of language, as evolutionists attempt to teach their theory. The use of key words, such as ‘probably’ and ‘may be’ is examined. Also the use of rhetorical questions and the imaginative use of narrative are investigated. All of this dissembling is compared to the simple truth of Scripture.
Speaker: Paul Taylor, Director of Mount St. Helens Creation Center, was born and grew up near Manchester in the North of England. He studied piano at Chetham’s School of Music, but read Chemistry at the University of Nottingham. Paul taught Chemistry, Physics and Science in government (“public”) schools in England and Wales for 18 years, eventually becoming a Head of Science, with a Masters in Science Education and Management from the University of Cardiff.
Paul was saved at the age of 15. He came across creationist literature in his late teens, and quickly became involved in speaking and writing on the subject of creation and evolution, Genesis and apologetics. Since 2005, he has been a full-time creation speaker, having worked for Answers in Genesis (UK/Europe) and Creation Today. He and his wife are the Directors of the Mount St Helens Creation Center. Paul is married to Geri, and they have five children between them.

Paul Taylor, the Director of Mount St. Helens Creation Center, will be with us at the worship services and during the Sunday School hour.
Worship Services, 8:30 am and 11:00 am: Paul Taylor, speaks on Creation or Evolution: Who Cares? Why does it matter what Christians believe on the subject? The talk aims to show the correct biblical way to think through the issues, and the implications for other Biblical doctrines.
Sunday School Hour, 9:45 am: Paul Taylor will give a talk on Only Believe. The Christian “world” seems to be full of apologists today, trying to defend the Christian faith, and prove the existence of God. This honorable intent is marred by the fact that most modern apologists attempt their ministry in a manner which is unbiblical. In this talk, taken from the book of the same name, Paul gives an introduction to biblical apologetics, commonly known as presuppositional apologetics. He shows its biblical basic, and outlines its methodologies.

Mount St. Helens: A Message For Today
Description: The eruption of Mount St Helens in 1980 took evolutionary geologists by surprise, as the Earth’s surface was changed rapidly and catastrophically, instead of in millions of years. Many of the effects seen around the mountain are similar, in miniature, to what we would expect to see worldwide, because of the Flood of Genesis 6 through 8. In this talk, Paul Taylor takes you on a journey to the mountain, so that we can learn the lessons seen there.
