Preparing Youth for Missions

Description: The next generation is preparing for missions, going on short term trips and as a career. We must recognize that more than 60% of our youth leave The Faith when they leave home because they did not get answers to their hard questions and were not able to counter their indoctrination in evolution and secularism. To be effective in missions, youth need to understand the gospel, have a biblical worldview, and develop critical thinking skills to overcome roadblocks to The Faith. They need to have trust in The Word, be ready to defend The Word, and then ready to share The Word.
Speaker: Dr. Heinz Lycklama earned a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Physics (1965) and a Ph. D. degree in experimental Nuclear Physics (1969) from McMaster University in Canada. Since then he has worked in the telecommunications and computer software industries at Bell Telephone Laboratories in NJ and at Interactive Systems Corporation in CA – as an individual contributor and in management positions. In 1992 Dr. Lycklama founded Open Systems Technology Associates (OSTA) to offer his technology management consulting services to various start-ups in the high technology industry. In 2013 Heinz founded the Apologetics Forum to help equip believers in the defense of The Faith.
Being challenged in his Christian faith by what he was taught in university in the 1960’s, Dr. Lycklama has always maintained an active interest in the Creation vs. Evolution controversy. Speaker: Dr Jonathan Sarfati, chief scientist at CMI, is a dual citizen of Australia and New Zealand. He earned a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from a secular NZ university. Dr Sarfati co-authored papers in mainstream scientific journals including one on high-temperature superconductors published in Nature when he was 22.
Jonathan was a co-founder of an Apologetics Society in New Zealand, then joined Creation Ministries International (CMI) in Australia in 1996. In 2010, he and his American wife transferred from the Australian office to the USA office near Atlanta.
Dr Sarfati has authored some of the most popular and powerful books on the issues of origins, strongly defending biblical (‘young earth’) creation and refuting the strongest arguments for evolution and millions of years. His first book, Refuting Evolution, has sold half a million copies, making it the best-selling creationist book of all time (apart from the Bible!). His latest and most important book is The Genesis Account, a thorough 800-page theological and scientific commentary on Genesis 1–11.
Jonathan is also a chess master and former New Zealand chess champion, and drew a tournament game with former world champion Boris Spassky. One specialty is playing simultaneous chess games, sometimes ‘blindfold’, i.e. from memory.

Calling All Chess Players!
Open Chess Challenge with Dr. Jonathan Sarfati
Dr. Sarfati will play up to 30 chess players at once in the afternoon after the Mini-Conference to be held in the morning at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon, WA. Players are selected on a first come basis and must bring their own chess board to the tournament.

Dr Jonathan Sarfati Ph.D., F.M. is an accomplished chess master and a former New Zealand Chess Champion, representing New Zealand in three Chess Olympiads (he drew with Boris Spassky, world champion 1969-1972). In 1988, the International Chess Federation awarded him the title of F.I.D.E. Master (FM). Jonathan has been known to play multiple chess matches while he is blindfolded. Jonathan more regularly plays multiple sighted challengers, up to 20 – 30 at a time.
Dr. Sarfati has performed this feat, against up to 12 challengers at once, at several major international conferences. A former chess champion of New Zealand, Jonathan is a scientist whose Ph.D. is in physical chemistry and quantum physics. He works for Creation Ministries International as a lecturer, scientist, and writer, showing how Christians can believe the Bible from cover to cover—especially when it comes to Genesis and creation vs evolution!

Dr. Dawkins isn’t known for being friendly! Can Christians withstand his attack? Watch and see. Richard Dawkins is one of the most antagonistic of the “new atheists”. In this talk Carl takes a video that Dr. Dawkins made where he ambushed then President of Concerned Women for America, Wendy Wright, and addresses the questions that he raised. Christians need to be aware that if Richard Dawkins is using an argument, hundreds of those that follow his every move will use it. Using secular sources Carl will show that the claims that he makes are not that difficult to give an answer to. The problem is not in the evidence, the problem is in the interpretation of the evidence. What about homo erectus? What about homo habilus?What about austrolopithecus? What about children having “gill slits” as they develop in their mothers womb?These plus many more questions are addressed in this talk. This talk is designed to address the “Know it!” component of the Reasons for Hope ministry.
The second seminar at 10:30 AM is on Real World Evangelism – The Smithsonian!
Can’t make it to Washington D.C. to tour the Smithsonian? Let’s do a virtual tour, from a biblical perspective.Using only secular sources Carl will discuss the supposed evolutionary ancestors that are depicted in the Smithsonian’s 24.5 million dollar exhibit showing human evolution. This is a great talk to do with people just before they go on a trip to Washington D.C. and visit the world famous museum. You may be surprised at what is actually found, and what is depicted. You may also be surprised to find out that the supposed “evidence” that is used supposedly showing human evolution as a fact, isn’t what the actual evidence supports. This is a VERY important talk and ones that will hopefully show parents how to teach their children to apply their faith in the “real world”! This talk will address the “Know it!” & “Share it!” challenge.
Speaker: Carl Kerby is an inspiring, motivating and highly respected Christian speaker. With more than 20 years of ministry experience, Carl shares his extensive knowledge and understanding of God’s creation in his presentations, outreach events, books and other resources as the President and founding board member of Reasons for Hope, Inc.
Carl Kerby is a former air-traffic controller and a creation apologist speaker who teaches how to defend the Bible against scientific naturalism. He was one of the founding board members for Answers in Genesis, and has been described by AiG as one of their most dynamic lecturers on the Book of Genesis. After serving with Answers in Genesis for over 15 years, Carl became the Founder and President of Reasons for Hope. He is a much sought-after speaker both in the United States and abroad, and has spoken in Bermuda, Canada, England, Greece, Israel, Jamaica, Japan, Mexico, the Philippines, Wales and others.
He grew up in a liberal church that taught evolution could be mixed with God’s Word. In 1987 Carl Kerby became a Christian after attending a crusade in Salt Lake City, Utah. While an air-traffic controller and riding in the cockpit on a flight, the Creation vs. Evolution issue came up during a conversation with the pilots. The co-pilot argued that the Bible and Evolution were a totally different worldviews that could not be in harmonized. He then introduced Carl to Ken Ham’s book The Lie: Evolution, which helped him trust in the Bible as authoritative on the issue of creation.
Carl and his wife Masami have been married for more than 30 years. They have two children, Alisa (Bobby) and Carl Jr. (Tish) and four grandchildren, Trey, Naomi, Mari and James. Carl is the author of Remote Control: The Power of Hollywood on Today’s Culture, Absotively, Posilutely, The Best Evidence for Creation and Reasons for Hope In The Mosaic of Your Life. The first seminar on Meet Your Ancestors: Adam and Eve starts at 9:00 AM.
Adam and Eve are the ancestors of all people who have ever lived. You may never hear this on television, and, sadly, this fact is not taught in many churches today. Yet, there is a lot of evidence not only for Adam and Eve, but also for Noah’s Flood and the Tower of Babel. Where is this evidence? In our genes! Come and hear about the history of the world as we know it from genetics. The book of Genesis comes alive if one knows where to look, and Dr. Carter has spent years searching for the clues that lead to the answer to the question of the origin of all the peoples on earth. Now, when confronted with a person who does not believe the Bible, you will be equipped to answer with a simple question, “But what did you expect to see?” The things we are learning from modern genetics points straight at Genesis. Come and meet your ancestors: Adam and Eve!
The second seminar on Y-Chromosome Noah starts at 10:30 AM.
There is no specific reason in evolutionary theory to predict a single male ancestor for the human race, but he certainly existed. This single ancestor is also a direct prediction of the biblical text. By analyzing the 1000 Genomes Y chromosome database, it is possible to conclude that ‘Y chromosome Noah’ lived in the biblical time frame, in the Middle East.
Speaker: Dr Carter was converted to Christ at an early age, but did not know what to do with the theory of evolution. He always knew what he wanted to believe, but had no way to express what he was thinking and no evidence to support his views. In his freshman year of college, he was exposed to the information for creation for the first time and soon after adopted it as his modus operandi. He says he felt a tremendous joy when he realized his science and his religion were no longer at odds. This joy (and, he says, Creation magazine and the Journal of Creation) enabled him to get through the in-depth evolutionary training of his undergraduate and graduate programs with his faith intact.
He obtained a BS in Applied Biology from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1992. He then spent four years teaching high school biology, chemistry, physics and electronics before going to the University of Miami to obtain his PhD in Marine Biology. He successfully completed this program in 2003 with a dissertation on “Cnidarian Fluorescent Proteins.” While in Miami, he studied the genetics of pigmentation in corals and other invertebrates, designed and built an aquaculture facility for Caribbean corals, performed well over 500 SCUBA dives, many of them at night, and licensed a spin-off product of his research (a patented fluorescent protein) to a biotech company.
He is currently a senior scientist and speaker for CMI-USA in Atlanta, Georgia, where he lives with his wife, Leanne, and children and is currently researching human genetics and other issues related to biblical creation.

Description: There are two possibilities for the author of life – God or natural processes. The biblical case for first life is presented. Then we examine the case for natural processes and present four reasons why first life cannot form by means of natural processes: 1) Law of Biogenesis, 2) Failure of self-arrangement of molecules into a living organism, 3) Law of Probability, and 4) Information requires an intelligent agent. The fossil record, taxonomy, complexity, and design support the creation of different kinds of living organisms as recorded in the first chapter of Genesis.

Speaker: Dr Jonathan Sarfati, chief scientist at CMI, is a dual citizen of Australia and New Zealand. He earned a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from a secular NZ university. Dr Sarfati co-authored papers in mainstream scientific journals including one on high-temperature superconductors published in Nature when he was 22.
Jonathan was a co-founder of an Apologetics Society in New Zealand, then joined Creation Ministries International (CMI) in Australia in 1996. In 2010, he and his American wife transferred from the Australian office to the USA office near Atlanta.
Dr Sarfati has authored some of the most popular and powerful books on the issues of origins, strongly defending biblical (‘young earth’) creation and refuting the strongest arguments for evolution and millions of years. His first book, Refuting Evolution, has sold half a million copies, making it the best-selling creationist book of all time (apart from the Bible!). His latest and most important book is The Genesis Account, a thorough 800-page theological and scientific commentary on Genesis 1–11.
Jonathan is also a chess master and former New Zealand chess champion, and drew a tournament game with former world champion Boris Spassky. One specialty is playing simultaneous chess games, sometimes ‘blindfold’, i.e. from memory.

Dr. Sarfati will play up to 30 chess players at once in the afternoon after the Mini-Conference to be held in the morning at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon, WA. Players are selected on a first come basis and must bring their own chess board to the tournament.

Dr Jonathan Sarfati Ph.D., F.M. is an accomplished chess master and a former New Zealand Chess Champion, representing New Zealand in three Chess Olympiads (he drew with Boris Spassky, world champion 1969-1972). In 1988, the International Chess Federation awarded him the title of F.I.D.E. Master (FM). Jonathan has been known to play multiple chess matches while he is blindfolded. Jonathan more regularly plays multiple sighted challengers, up to 20 – 30 at a time.
Dr. Sarfati has performed this feat, against up to 12 challengers at once, at several major international conferences. A former chess champion of New Zealand, Jonathan is a scientist whose Ph.D. is in physical chemistry and quantum physics. He works for Creation Ministries International as a lecturer, scientist, and writer, showing how Christians can believe the Bible from cover to cover—especially when it comes to Genesis and creation vs evolution!

The second seminar at 10:30 AM is on Are Human and Chimps 98% Similar?A very common claim still occasionally employed to prove ape to human evolution is the claim that Chimp and Human DNA is 99 or 98 percent similar. In fact the similarity is no more 84 percent meaning that the difference is close to a half billion DNA differences. Dr. Bergman reviews the major evidence that exposes the 98% myth.
Speaker: Dr Jerry Bergman is an author, teacher and a speaker. He has taught biology, biochemistry, anatomy and genetics, psychology and other courses for over 40 years at the University of Toledo Medical College, Bowling Green State University, and other colleges. His 9 degrees include a Doctorate from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. The 1,026 college credit hours he has earned is the equivalent to almost 20 master’s degrees. Bergman fits in the website The 10 Most Educated People on the Planet ahead of several others, and in the science area is number one.
His over 1,400 publications are in both scholarly and popular science journals. Dr. Bergman’s work has been translated into 13 languages including French, German, Italian, Spanish, Danish, Polish, Czech, Chinese, Arabic and Swedish. Over 80,000 copies of the 43 books and monographs that he has authored or co-authored are in print.

The ability to change the DNA essentially any species raises challenges to the biblical worldview. Are humans allowed to monkey with God’s creation in this way? What if the changes are designed to improve or save human life? What if the changes would occur, or already have occurred, in nature? These are honest questions that need to be discussed openly. Yet, there are definite limits to what we are morally allowed to do. Specifically, the modification of human embryos is a very dangerous practice in that these techniques often induce abnormalities that the future adult human would have to suffer through. Also, a baby has no ability to give informed consent. Worse, the modern practice of genetic engineering often uses aborted fetuses or cell lines derived from aborted fetuses or leftover embryos from the fertility industry. This is a grave moral hazard. Despite the known problems, all aspects of genetic engineering should be not necessarily be outlawed, for there is a great potential benefit to humanity.
The second seminar at 10:30 AM is on Amazing Engineering in Ancient Egypt.
The ancient Egyptians may not have had the wheel, and they never mastered some as simple as the arch, but they build amazing things in their near-treeless world by becoming the masters of stone and sand. From exquisite stone vases carved from the hardest basalt to the Great Pyramid of Cheops, they were both artisans and engineers. This insular society had forgotten almost everything about the God of the Bible, yet they joined together to make long-lasting monuments to their greatness that still awe us today. How did they do these amazing things? The answers are ingenious.
Speaker: Dr Carter was converted to Christ at an early age, but did not know what to do with the theory of evolution. He always knew what he wanted to believe, but had no way to express what he was thinking and no evidence to support his views. In his freshman year of college, he was exposed to the information for creation for the first time and soon after adopted it as his modus operandi. He says he felt a tremendous joy when he realized his science and his religion were no longer at odds. This joy (and, he says, Creation magazine and the Journal of Creation) enabled him to get through the in-depth evolutionary training of his undergraduate and graduate programs with his faith intact.
He obtained a BS in Applied Biology from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1992. He then spent four years teaching high school biology, chemistry, physics and electronics before going to the University of Miami to obtain his PhD in Marine Biology. He successfully completed this program in 2003 with a dissertation on “Cnidarian Fluorescent Proteins.” While in Miami, he studied the genetics of pigmentation in corals and other invertebrates, designed and built an aquaculture facility for Caribbean corals, performed well over 500 SCUBA dives, many of them at night, and licensed a spin-off product of his research (a patented fluorescent protein) to a biotech company.
He is a senior scientist and speaker for CMI-USA in Atlanta, Georgia, where he is currently researching human genetics and other issues related to biblical creation.

Earth: Designed For Life
In this Mini Conference Dr. Sherwin brings two seminars on the theme of Earth: Designed For Life on Saturday morning from 9:00 AM until 12 noon with a break after the first seminar, and extended Q&A after the second seminar:
- Session 1: The Wonderful Oceans – Dr. Sherwin discusses the amazing variety of marine life found in venues from tidal pools all the way to crushing ocean depths over five miles down. He also talks about the critical connection between moon-induced tides and weather, and important paths or currents in the oceans mentioned in Scripture (Psalm 8). Finally, he addresses how the volume of water in the oceans relates to the Genesis Flood.
- Session 2: Hummingbirds By Design – Of all the birds of God’s creation, the hummingbird might be the most remarkable. Everything about these creatures shouts design. Their little hearts can beat more than 1,000 times a minute, while their wings beat from 50 to 80 times a second. Its specialized interaction with plants, visual color range, complex vocalization, unique flight, and physiological capabilities are a testament to God’s design.

Speaker: Dr. Frank Sherwin received his bachelor’s degree in biology from Western State College, Gunnison, Colorado, in 1978. He attended graduate school at the University of Northern Colorado, where he studied under the late Gerald D. Schmidt, one of the foremost parasitologists in America. In 1985, Dr. Sherwin obtained a master’s degree in zoology. He published his research in the peer reviewed Journal of Parasitology. In 2021, he received an Honorary Doctorate of Science from Pensacola Christian College. He contributes his scientific expertise to a variety of ICR’s publications on creation science and is one of ICR’s most sought-after speakers. He is the author of The Ocean Book and Guide to Animals, co-author of The Fossil Record: Unearthing Nature’s History of Life and The Human Body: An Intelligent Design, and a contributor to Guide to Creation Basics and Creation Basics & Beyond.

In this Mini Conference Dr. DeYoung brings two seminars on the theme of Discovery of Design on Saturday morning from 9:00 AM until 12 noon with a break after the first seminar, and extended Q&A after the second seminar:
- Session 1: Design in Nature and Biomimicry – Dr. DeYoung presents practical design ideas learned about nature, and how these ideas were applied to the design of velcro (e.g. feathers), and in medical tests (e.g. horseshoe crabs). Design examples are shown in flight, water life, land animals, people, and plants.
- Session 2: The Moon, Our Nearest Neighbor in Space – Dr. DeYoung covers the important facts about earth’s moon, including: a) natural moon origin theories, b) evidences for the moon’s recent supernatural creation, and c) the moon’s importance for our survival and well-being.

Speaker: Dr. Don DeYoung is a creation scientist and educator specializing in astronomy and physics. He holds an emeritus science faculty position at Grace College, Winona Lake, Indiana following a career in teaching and research. Don is a graduate of Michigan Tech (B.S., M.S.), Grace Seminary (M.Div.), and Iowa State University (PhD, physics). He has written 21 books on Bible-science topics including object lessons for kids.
Don is a Fellow and past president of the Creation Research Society with over 1700 members worldwide. He speaks and writes on a broad range of Bible-science topics and believes that the details of nature are a powerful testimony to the Creator’s care for us. Don is regarded as one of the Creation Pioneers.
Don and his wife Sally have three married daughters and ten grand and great-grandchildren. His activities include kayak-fishing and wilderness backpacking.
